The roots of that certain feeling of being brought up to be a certain way (presumably by their parents) reach back to the very beginning of this country, in that people who could speak had to learn how to talk, and to understand what words to use.Someone being treated badly was enough for them to respond in kind, without understanding why they were treated badly. Learning how to talk was the first step to not getting slapped around, because someone who could speak was always there to help out, at least until it became evident that the people who treated them like that were jerks and really didn't want to help.So there was a certain gap between a person's perspective and how we behave as a society today. This gap was also exacerbated by the fact that things did not change as fast as people ex pected, and it took time for our new kids to get to know one another and develop relationships. The culture of this country was set at that point in time, and no amount of education would change that.Nowadays, our society is moving much faster than that person's perspective ever could have imagined. We have been able to accept others more freely, even though many of us would still be worried if we could talk to someone who wasn't from our own race. We have grown to trust others much better, and have a much higher level of tolerance for the differences in people than that of years ago.But in this transition period, we can no longer look to older generations for examples of what our college paper topics on racism and the development of consciousness should be like. People born within that same generation have grown up with this feeling of being a member of a certain group, and it has become almost impossible for them to come to terms with what was and is, for that matter.Of course, in order to truly understand that gap between a person's perspective and how we behave as a society today, we need to look at the racial gaps. While we can no longer deny that there are still racial disparities, those racial gaps are smaller than they have ever been, but this does not necessarily mean that all people are equal.Just because we can now accept the differences between the races doesn't mean that there are no differences between those people that we once saw as different groups. And those differences are also the basis for all of the hate and bigotry that is out there in this country today.No matter how we can reduce or even eliminate all of the racial disparities in our society, we can still see a lot of the issues associated with that feeling of being brought up to be a certain way still persist today. And while the gap between a person's perspective and how we behave as a society is significantly smaller, the deep seeded issues of racism and hatred still exist in this c ountry.
